A dazzling light show illuminated the Hong Kong skyline to celebrate the new year on Monday as protests continued across the city.

This replaced the larger annual midnight fireworks display which the city normally holds, which was cancelled by authorities citing security concerns.

On the same day, pro-democracy protesters formed human chains to block roads and were arrested by riot police in the latest anti-government demonstrations.
