Lyrics of Today’s Song

What gives us hope as we face this new year ahead? I like to think these words express it pretty well for us.

But as for me, I will sing about your power, Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O god, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love.
Psalm 59:16-17

We start this day and this year with the God who has infinite power and who has chosen to use that power to create a place of refuge for us.

We live in a world that has many troubles and where it’s easy to get tripped up by misunderstandings or just plain wrong choices, by ourselves or others.

In the middle of all that we have God who promises us unfailing love at just the time when we are feeling discouraged or distressed. And God doesn’t just have motivational thoughts for us, God has the power and the love to actually create something safe and secure in both our hearts and circumstances.

There are more than 360 days to go in this new year and we don’t know one detail about any of them. On our own we don’t have the resources to face many of the challenges that will come our way – maybe that are already here for us.

But, we have this wonderful record from history and God’s own promises that every morning He will be with us so we are able to sing of His power and unfailing love working on our behalf. Knowing that and trusting the God who stands behind His Word, is the only thing that gives optimism and joy as we look into the unknown future.

Heavenly Father, we have many examples of Your unfailing love in the story of our lives. In what is as yet unwritten in our stories, we trust that will be the same because You are the same and You promise to never leave us nor forsake us.

We pray for rock solid faith to be the foundation of our hearts so we awake in the safety of Your love each morning and move through the day with the calm assurance of that it’s all going to be okay because we belong to You and are living in Your safe refuge for us. Amen

I don’t know about you but just saying these words brings calmness to my soul and a smile to my face:

You, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love.

Let’s live in that joyful assurance today, and maybe even sing about God’s power and unfailing love.
