Bright ambient light is well-known to improve the mood among humans. When it comes to improving cognitive function, the room light plays an important role. When we get exposed to dim light, mimicking the cloudy days of winters or typical indoor lighting, spatial learning is impaired. This is similar to when people can't find their way back to their cars in a busy parking lot after spending a few hours in a shopping mall or movie theatre. Those who live in dim light and darkness, showed about 30 percent loss of capacity in their hippocampus, the region of the brain which is crucial for both short-term and long-term memory formation, as well as for spatial learning. Those who were exposed to bright light during their waking hours, “showed significant improvement” on the spatial task. This happened because of a causal link between the intensity of light and two things, one called the brain derived neurotrophic factor and the other called dendritic spines.
