...Source: Transcript: Per InsideEVs, California is giving Tesla 60 days to rename its Autopilot feature or risk having its vehicle sales suspended in the state. At the center of the issue is the claim that Tesla’s branding misleads consumers—“Autopilot,” regulators argue, inaccurately suggests the vehicles can drive themselves.

A California administrative judge recently issued a proposed decision stating the company violated rules around truthful advertising. The California DMV has temporarily stayed Tesla’s dealer license suspension but warns that if Tesla doesn’t comply by renaming Autopilot, it will face a 30-day halt on sales. Importantly, the ruling applies only to the Autopilot name—not “Full Self-Driving.”

The fight dates back to 2022, when the DMV first challenged Tesla's marketing, saying it exaggerated the software’s autonomous capabilities. DMV Director Steve Gordon acknowledged Tesla’s major presence in the state, especially with the Model Y being the top-selling car in its segment, but says enforcement will happen if the company doesn’t act.

While Tesla hasn’t commented, it has shown in the past it's willing to make name changes—it renamed “Full Self-Driving” in China to “Intelligent Assisted Driving” earlier this year.
