The characters are so well etched and the plot progresses very quickly keeping the reader engrossed.
Writer Sujatha has written several stories - especially his crime novels - which were refreshingly new and captivating at that point in time. 40–50 years back, his writing style, choice of subject matter and diction were entirely novel to Tamil literature.
But his enduring contribution to serious literature is mainly in his short stories. For example, ‘Srirangam Kathaigal’, ‘Madhyamar’ series, ‘Kagitha Sangiligal’, ‘Nagaram’, ‘Kaanikkai’ and scores of others, and some of his novels like ‘Eppodthum penn’.
Sujatha effortlessly wore two hats interchangeably: He could write pulp fiction with the same ease with which he produced world class literature. Depending on your taste, you have to carefully pick and choose between the two different genres if you want to understand this genius writer. It is very easy to sample the wrong genre and brand him one way or the other. If we fail to discover this prolific writer, the loss will be ours.
His third avatar, namely as a popular science writer, produced some of the finest writings on science and technology in Tamil. His contribution in this area remains unrivalled till today.
