Timmy Mallett on Cycling to Santiago de Compostela and His Life's Journey

Timmy talks about Utterly Brilliant!, his heart-warming memoir, written in Timmy’s inimitable style, which tells the story of his career and life to date, alongside the narrative of a physical challenge which Timmy describes as ‘the biggest thing I have ever done’.

The latter took place in spring 2018, when Timmy set out on a 3,500-kilometre cycle ride from his home in to Santiago de Compostela and back – battling the blustery ‘Beast from the East’ along the way – in memory of his brother Martin, whose funeral was just two days before Timmy started his journey.

Martin, who was born with Downs Syndrome and was not originally expected to live beyond his teenage years, died at the age of 64. Timmy’s mission was ‘to cycle alone across Europe with my paints, without pre-booking accommodation, painting whatever I encounter’, honouring Martin’s outlook on life that everyone can reach their potential.
