if it weren't for the persistent efforts
of a small group of Brazilians in the
early 20th century the statue might
never have existed the idea for a
monument to Christ was first proposed as
early as the 1850s by a local Catholic
priest but it wasn't until the 1920s
with Brazil celebrating 100 Years of

never met in person but their
collaboration resulted in a masterpiece

construction of the statue began in 1922
and continued for nearly a decade and it
wasn't a straightforward task given the
statue's massive size it had to be built
in sections and transported up the steep
slopes of corcovado the Towering figure
stands 98 fet tall but it's the
outstretched arms extending 92 ft wide
that give Christ the Redeemer its awe
inspiring presence These Arms seem to
embrace not only the city of Rio but the
entire world symbolizing peace
protection and unity what makes this
statue even more remarkable is the
material used in its construction the
outer layer is made of soap stone chosen
for its ability to withstand harsh
weather conditions and its smooth
tactile surface soapstone also gave the
statue a slightly greenish tint which
adds to its almost ethereal appearance
when viewed from afar up close you can
see the intricate work the soap stone is
pieced together like a mosaic with tiny
tiles forming the entire surface each of
these tiles was meticulously placed by
the hundreds of workers who toiled on
the Statue over the years but did you
know that Christ the Redeemer is
regularly struck by lightning due to its
height and location it's an easy target
for thunderstorms in 2014 a powerful
lightning strike even damaged part of
the right thumb chipping off a small
portion of the statue fortunately the
soap stone makes repairs relatively
straightforward and the monument was
quickly restored today Christ the
Redeemer isn't just a symbol of
Christianity it's a symbol of Brazil
itself welcoming visitors from all over
the world with open arms its message
transcends religious boundaries standing
as a beacon of unity hope and peace the
statue was declared one of the new Seven
Wonders of the World in 2007 cementing
its status as a global icon and while
