John Bence is a composer and producer from Bristol, UK, whose work tackles epic narrative themes and uncompromising sonics with a juddering emotional punch. At just 24 years old, Bence has already built up a striking body of work. Following releases for Nicholas Jaar's Other People imprint and Yves Tumor's new Grooming label, Thrill Jockey will be reissuing Bence's visceral magnum opus Kill on July 10th, 2020 with a new album scheduled for the fall.

Kill is a piece in three movements.

1. Kill / Aftermath
2. Alone / Suicide
3. Afterlife / Judgement

Hailed by Boomkat as a "quite unlike anything else we heard in 2018" and one of their releases of that year, Kill is as captivating as it is unnerving. Unfurling in three movements, it charts the macabre story of a murderer who kills his lover and then takes his own like to accelerate towards God and judgement. Throughout Bence performs like a man possessed, shifting from aching operatic vocals and Gregorian chant to chilling screams over a bed of plucked cellos, bellicose drums and overcast electronics. The raw emotional power of Bence's live shows have seen him already invited to tour with artists including Xiu Xiu and Grouper, as well as performing in London composer Ashley Paul's ensemble. Bence will be performing select live dates in the second half of 2020, with more news to follow.
