At 11:58 p.m., emergency dispatch receives a call from the theater, two moviegoers unresponsive, possible head injuries. Within minutes, ambulances, police, and fire crews arrive in the parking lot. The building is sealed off, staff standing aside in shock, unable to comprehend what is unfolding. Paramedics enter the auditorium. They confirm the woman is deceased. The young man is still alive, though unresponsive. He is carried out on a stretcher, placed on a ventilator. Crime scene detectives photograph the seats, the stains, the aisles.

Morning breaks on July 27th, 2021, like any other day in Corona, commuters heading to work, children leaving for summer programs, cafés filling with the morning rush. Few realize that just a short distance away, police have cordoned off the Regal Edwards Corona Crossings parking lot. Crime scene vans sit on the asphalt, and yellow, do not cross, tape wraps around the perimeter. By then, the identities of the deceased woman and the critically injured young man still had not been officially released. Investigators found no weapon and no signs of a struggle. The absence of a weapon immediately eliminated self-inflicted harm but raised dozens of questions, Who fired the shot? How did no one hear anything?
