Reasons for Back Pain

Welcome to Sterling Physical Therapy, I'm Sterling Carter. In our physical therapy clinic we see and treat lower back pain all the time. It's so common that over 85% of you may experience lower back pain at some point in your lifetime. I thought it would be helpful to do a quick post on the primary reasons for back pain and what you can do to reduce back pain.

Ok, first let's take a look at the lower back or lumbar spine. The lower back consist of five bones, or vertebrae, stacked one on top of the other. Soft, spongy, disc are stacked between these bones.

Your lower back or lumbar spine provides protection to your spinal cord and the muscles that connect to your vertebrae provide support and mobility for your lower back.

Now if your back pain includes: Loss of muscular control, Loss of bowel or bladder function, If you have a History of cancer, or recent trauma seek medical attention as soon as possible.

The three most common causes of low back pain are: bad posture when sitting, frequently bending forward, and lifting heavy items. Trauma may also be a cause for low back pain, but in most cases it is the repetitive strain on the lumbar spine that is main cause for lower back pain.

Here is the good news: Good posture and improving strength and mobility in your lower back in many cases will reduce episodes of low back pain.
