Early typewriters had metal arms for each key — and when people typed too fast, nearby letters would jam together.
To solve this, inventor Christopher Latham Sholes rearranged the keys so that common letters like T and H were kept apart.
Typing became slower — but the machine stopped jamming.

That layout became QWERTY, and it stuck!
Even when technology improved, people were already used to it.
