The Gateway Chapter of Trout Unlimited recently placed Whitlock Vibert Boxes, filled with 30,000 wild brown trout eggs in the Dry Creek Section of Westover Farms in Steelville Missouri.

Nearly 20 volunteers from all over the region gathered at the picturesque Westover Farms with the blessing of the Glarner Family and in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Former Chapter President Ted Calcaterra was instrumental in the project, highlighting the huge successes similar efforts have made in the neighboring state of Arkansas.

Current Chapter President Ryan McCarty, VP's Louis Whittenberg, Wes Swee, and other board members helped bring the three year study to fruition. The Gateway chapter placed 30,000 wild brown trout eggs with a plan to make several follow on placements over the next 36 months.

"Our hope is to see a wild spawning population of brown trout take hold in this watershed, and prove the method as a viable option for other Missouri Fisheries." - Ryan McCarty

Fisheries Biologist Erik Sanders oversaw the care and handling of the brown trout eggs and worked with the chapter, along with Westover farms to select the most promising sites.

Dr. Ed Heist, Professor and Associate Director, Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is helping the organization with analysis.
