The Trump administration has ordered immigration officials to stop processing green card applications for people from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, marking a change that immigration policy hasn't seen since the aftermath of 9/11.

The executive action affects thousands of immigrants already in the application process and includes mandatory re-vetting of refugees who have previously been cleared to enter the United States. Violeta Chapin, associate dean and clinical professor of law at CU Boulder Law School, said the moves raise significant legal questions about national origin discrimination.

"This is extraordinary in the last week in terms of the breadth of things that are happening and the speed at which they are happening," Chapin said. "I don't know that it's all necessarily legal."
