Facing threats from Ola, Uber and Rapido, Kolkata’s iconic yellow taxis face ‘existential crisis’

Kolkata, renowned as ‘City of Joy’, is famous for many things, iconic yellow coloured taxi is one of them. The taxis first hit the Kolkata streets in the 1950s and until 2014 they were regarded highly for their reliability and quick availability. Built by Hindustan Motors, these taxis are under threat because of the convenience of Ola, Uber cabs, and Rapido bikes.
Speaking to ANI, a taxi driver said, “Government hasn’t done anything for us till today and for the yellow taxis. How will we manage then?”
“If Ambassador gets distinct from the streets we have to find another profession; it’s about the matter of livelihood. Government is not going to give anything. More than Ola Ubers we are facing problems with Rapido bikes which are on the streets without permission,” taxi driver said.
