While signed with his mother Doris Day's label, Columbia Records, Terry Day (Terry Melcher) also produced songs for the label. One of the albums he produced was Surfin' USA credited to a group dubbed The Hot Doggers. They were actually some of Hollywood's best session players hired for music aimed at teens. With Steve Douglas (Steve Kreisman) as the arranger and session leader, ten of the Wrecking Crew members were in Columbia Studios late night on March 13 beginning at 10:00 pm and played until 2:00 am the next day, with a little overtime included. Among the four songs they tracked was this one, "The Original Surfer's Stomp." On guitars were Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye and Glen Campbell, with Ray Pohlman on bass. Hal Blaine and Rene Hall were the drummers, with Jay Migliori and Louis Blackburn on horns. On pianos were Bruce Johnston and Leon Russell, who also played the organ tracks. Bruce co-wrote the song with Judy Harriet and recorded it for Del-Fi Records in 1961. Bruce was also Terry Melcher's partner in the duo Bruce & Terry.
