Testing A DIY BOOMLESS & SELF TACKING Staysail Setup | Sailboat Story 240

Описание к видео Testing A DIY BOOMLESS & SELF TACKING Staysail Setup | Sailboat Story 240

Our sailboat came with a staysail that included a boom. Our preference though, is to keep our foredeck space clear and open so when we headed out to go sailing, we left the boom behind. To make our staysail work "boomless", we rig a temporary sheeting system, go for a test sail, and observe how well the sail behaves. We discover that the staysail works just fine without the boom. Of course, the boat would sail marginally better if the boom were in place, but we're just fine with a slight performance decrease in exchange for maintaining our open deck space. Then there's the added benefit of removing the possibility of being clobbered by a swinging boom on the foredeck. For us, running our staysail boomless and self-tacking is the right move, and we're very pleased with how well the boat sails with the staysail, especially when sailing to windward.
