US’ newly declassified documents revealed ‘secret’ exchange between Russian President Putin and then US President George Bush. The U.S. & Russian leaders expressed their concern over Pakistan’s nuclear programme & proliferation activities. Document released by US National Security Archive revealed records of meetings & calls between them from 2001 to 2008. Pakistan’s ‘irresponsible’ handling of nuclear, AQ Khan’s network makes the two leaders, as put by Putin, “nervous”. In key exchange at Oval Office in 2005, Putin raised evidence of Pakistani-origin uranium found in Iranian centrifuges. “It was of Pakistani origin. That makes me nervous…”, Putin said, to which Bush replied, “It makes us nervous, too”. Bush told Putin about his talks with then Pakistan Army Chief, Gen Musharraf, about ‘nukes transfers to Iran & North Korea’. Pakistan put AQ Khan in jail, and some of his buddies under house arrest: President Bush told Russia’s Putin. President Bush further expressed his frustration on Pakistan-Iran’s secrecy, “Yes, the stuff Iranians forgot to tell IAEA about. That's a violation”. Meanwhile, in 2001’s Slovenia meeting, Putin bluntly described Pakistan as “just a junta” with nukes that has “no democracy”. “Yet West makes no criticism of it…” Putin went on to question the West’s silence over Pakistan’s wantonness. Transcript underscores persistent worries about Pakistan’s AQ Khan’s malicious networks of illicit transfer of nukes to Iran, North Korea, and Libya. Notably, India hit out at Pakistan over reports of its alleged nuclear testing, revealed by Trump, calling it “clandestine & illegal”.
