NOT FOR SALE... Class 3 (With Throttle) Ebikes California LAW!

No, you cannot buy a Class 3 e-bike with a throttle in California. As of January 3, 2025, manufacturers are no longer allowed to sell Class 3 e-bikes with a functional throttle. A rider caught with a Class 3 e-bike with a throttle that works above 20 mph could have their bike considered non-compliant.

California's new e-bike law, SB-1271, prohibits throttles on Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes, but manufacturers can still sell Class 2 e-bikes with throttles that are limited to 20 mph:
Class 2 e-bikes
Manufacturers can sell Class 2 e-bikes with throttles that are limited to 20 mph, but the rider is responsible for ensuring compliance. This means that the rider can modify the bike to reach speeds over 20 mph, but the throttle function is only active up to that speed.
Non-compliant e-bikes
Any vehicle that doesn't meet California's e-bike definition can't be marketed, sold, or labeled as an e-bike. Non-compliance can lead to criminal charges.
