Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami سرتيپ امير حاتمي hailed efforts by technicians of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF نيروي هوايي جمهوري اسلامي ايران) who managed to overhaul eight fighter jets and other military airplanes.

“The overhaul of military aircraft is a complicated process that only a few powerful countries in the world could do,” General Hatami said at a ceremony in which the Air Force received the airplanes.

Noting that the Air Force has taken “important steps” over the past 40 years to boost the country’s military capabilities, he said the overhaul of the military jets and planes has helped make the US sanctions ineffective and is an indication of “self-belief” of the Iranian military.

Following successful test flights in the presence of the Iranian defense minister and IRIAF commander.

- F-14 Tomcat fighter jet (US made overhauled & upgraded in Iran)
- F-4 Phantom II fighter jet (US made overhauled & upgraded in Iran)
- SU-24MK Fencer fighter jet (Soviet made overhauled & upgraded in Iran)
- Mirage F1BQ fighter jet (France made overhauled & upgraded in Iran)

- C-130 Hercules logistic aircraft (US made overhauled & upgraded in Iran)
- Fairchild F-27 military aircraft (US made overhauled in Iran)
- Boeing 707 cargo plane (US made overhauled in Iran)

Above mentioned aircrafts rejoined the country’s Air Force fleet.

Before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the overhaul of military planes in Iran was carried out by foreign military attaché. But today the Islamic Republic is able to overhaul military aircraft thanks to some of the world’s most adept engineers and technicians.

Iran has become one of only a handful of countries capable of performing the servicing and overhaul of its fleet of airplanes, both military and civilian.

This is while the country has been under sanctions since 1979 and the embargoes have become more intense since the country started its peaceful nuclear program.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF نيروي هوايي جمهوري اسلامي ايران) says it has outfitted its Mirage F1BQ fighter jets with indigenously-developed radars and various other equipment of domestic manufacture.

IRIAF Deputy Commander Brigadier General Amir Vahedi سرتيپ امير وحيدي made the remarks to Tasnim News Agency, which published them on Friday February 14, 2020.

The domestic detection apparatus has done away with the aircraft’s previous shortcomings in the area of radar surveillance capability, the official added.

The Islamic Republic has already armed the warplanes with Iranian-built weapon systems, making them capable of carrying various projectiles, including indigenous cruise missiles with up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) in range.

The French-made warplanes can be deployed for various missions, including those designed to turn the tables on the enemy during aerial warfare. They can also be used for provision of logistical support for ground operations.

France had armed the Iraqi military with a number of the warplanes during former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hossein’s صدام حسين Western-backed imposed war of 1980-88 against the Islamic Republic.

Years later, a number of Iraqi aircraft, including some Mirages, fled to Iran to escape capture prior to the Persian Gulf War جنگ شاخاب پارس in 1991, which saw the United States and its allies attacking Iraq for its annexation of Kuwait under Saddam.

Tehran confiscated the aircraft as partial compensation for the losses, which were imposed on it during the former warfare.
