I got tired of junky-looking hitches on our truck. We have a 2” receiver on our ½ ton truck, and we tow various trailers on the road and equipment used around our property. I wanted something that worked well, allowed easy adjustment to different heights, was extremely theft-resistant, AND looked great!
I searched for a great unit and repeatedly returned to the Weigh Safe website. These heavy-duty units are available to fit 2”, 2-½”, and 3” receiver hitches. They are feature-packed, easy to install and height-adjustable, display the trailer's tongue weight, have excellent security features, and can be reversed with the ball unit stowed under the bumper to reduce shin collisions!
After contacting Weigh Safe and finding that their home office is in my state, they offered to provide me with one for my review. As always, we require full permission to give an authentic review that includes any observations we have about the product, whether positive or negative. Weigh Safe readily agreed and provided us with the 6” drop kit, complete with 2” and 2-5/16” stainless steel balls and a very nice carrying case. The full set weighed 23 lbs. (10.5 kg).
The unit is made from 6061-T6511 aircraft-grade strength-aged aluminum, one of the highest grades of aluminum, and is beautifully milled and finished. If you prefer black, they do offer “Cerakote” ceramic-finished units. They also offer steel models if you need the strength and functionality of a Weigh Safe unit but need to spend a bit less.
For those who don’t want to change the ball from trailer to trailer, they offer 180 units that have two different-sized balls mounted. These can simply be flipped over to use the correct-sized ball for the trailer being towed.

While these mounts have many attractive features, the glycerin-filled weight indicator dial is the most important. Getting the tongue weight is critical, and the scale ensures you can.
The maximum weight when using a 2-5/16” ball and a 2” receiver shank would be 12,500 pounds (5670 kg)!

They also offer optional keyed-alike lock kits. You can get a hitch locking pin with the same key as the hitch and ball lock for $30. For $60, you can get the additional hitch locking pin, coupler latch lock, and padlock - all keyed alike with barrel keys.
Weigh Safe also offers a wide range of 5th-wheel gear and load stabilization bars and information on towing capacities for their gear and the three standard receiver sizes.
None of their products are cheap because they are well-made with high-quality materials and assembly practices. The model we have sells for $354 currently. It will last a long time and do its job well. While there is a temptation to find discount versions of their product, they are not as well made and do not have the same weight capacities.
