When Marissa, a then-sophomore student from Punahou School, looked through the syllabus of her required Asian history class, she noticed that the Philippines was not included. Despite Filipinos making up a quarter of Hawai'i's population, they are heavily underrepresented in education, including public schools. So in 2021, Marissa connected with 4 more students all over the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, and the Filipino Curriculum Project was born!

Fast forward to 2023, the course "Filipino History Culture," led by the Filipino Curriculum Project, was approved by the Hawai'i Department of Education and is ready to be offered in the Fall of 2024. This is the first time in the US that a high school social studies course dedicated to Filipino Studies was adopted in a STATEWIDE public education system. In addition, the Filipino Curriculum Project now has over 20 students representing 7 public and private schools in Hawai'i.
