3 day/2 night backpacking trip through the Goat Rocks Wilderness, knowing there would be rain, which would be great practice for me, IF I had all the proper gear!
Day 1: 12.85 miles 2921’ elevation gain.
Day 2: 11.97 miles 2207’ elevation gain.
Day 3: 12.57 miles 1879’ elevation gain.
I made some huge mistakes on this backpacking trip. I decided to leave my rain jacket and emergency poncho at home, but brought a backpacking umbrella instead, to save weight. Luckily I did bring a pair of Frogg Togg rain pants, but my pants and shorts still got wet on my 2nd day and my shirt was soaked, even with using the umbrella. The rain & wind were blowing sideways while on the Knife’s Edge, which took about 3 hours to get to normal ground. I also could not see more than 15-20 feet ahead of me and while on the “Old Snowy” alternate, I kept having to pull out my phone to check the map since I kept loosing the trail, due to the terrain.
This originally was supposed to be a 6 day/5 night backpack trip, from Walupt Lake to Chinook Pass. However, since I didn’t have all the proper gear, the weather posed a challenge (lightening, thunder, downpours) and a bad risk if I had injured myself, I thought helicopters would not be able to rescue me because of the weather and thick fog, I had potential of getting hypothermia. By my 2nd night, I was ready to get home.
Luckily I had done this exact route a month prior, which was epic with amazing weather and views!
