California imposes state income taxes on its residents and nonresidents that receive California state source income.

If you change residency between states during the year, you likely fall into the "part-year" resident tax category. In this example, we have a taxpayer who starts the 2022 calendar year as a resident of California, and then she moves from California to Florida to start a new job.

The part-year CA resident should file a CA Form 540NR to report their total income from all sources and specifically identify the income that is sourced to California.
