At this meeting of the Chicago Election Board, Chairwoman Marisel A. Hernandez, Commissioner/Secretary William J. Kresse and Commissioner Jonathan T. Swain:
Received a report from Executive Director Lance Gough on nursing home voting and pre-trial detainee voting ahead of Election Day.
Received a report from the Executive Director on the low number of returned Vote By Mail ballots at this point less than a week before Election Day.
Received a report from the Executive Director on other preparations for Election Day, including the need to still identify nine sites for polling places and the need to move to the use of universal vote centers in future elections.
Discussed possible alerts to voters who applied to Vote By Mail to urge them to return their ballots or to use alternatives such as Early Voting or voting at the Polling Place on Election Day.
Received a report from Assistant Executive Director Charles Holiday on the status of election judges, preparations of the electronic poll books, the schedule for the public test of vote-tabulation software.
Received a report from the Assistant Executive Director on plans to host Chicagoans who will be using a space in the lower level to collect absentee-voting for Senegal elections.
Received a report from Communications Director Jim Allen on requests for data from news media.
Received a report from Legal Counsel Adam W. Lasker about the possibility of an omnibus bill on elections. Mr. Lasker noted there are several issues that the Board could pursue, such as the ability to offer universal vote centers, update registration signatures with more recent records, such as ballot applications.
Discussed the status of Automatic Voter Registration and the projection by the Secretary of State's Office.
Approved a contract with Michael Murphy to oversee election day investigators and to assist the Board in refining security-related contingency plans.
Approved the disposal of records from the 2017 Special Election in the 4th Ward.
Received an update on pending litigation regarding candidates for City Clerk who were removed from the ballots and a candidate for Alderman in the 29th Ward who was ruled on the ballot. (After this meeting, the Appellate Court affirmed the rulings, and the candidates for City Clerk remained off the ballot, and the Aldermanic candidate in question in the 29th Ward remained on the ballot.)
