The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center is having a golden moment, celebrating its 50th Anniversary on Friday, September 29 in Duluth, Minnesota.

Visitors to the museum had the opportunity to go back in history and see a few extra pieces from the collection that is not always out on the shelves.

“The maritime museum does a great job capturing and telling the story of the role the Great Lakes play in American history,” commented Mark Eckel, who is from Minneapolis.

Another visitor, Tamara Sather, added, “I see something new each time I come visit. Seeing the progression of the ships and how they’ve changed. Wow, this goes so far back!”

And you can expect to see a few changes ahead.

“One of my goals is so try and rotate exhibits a little more, and get things out from collection storage and out there for people to see,” shared Director Sara Summers-Luedtke. “And we are actively collecting materials related to Lake Superior.”

Hours for the museum are:
Thursday-Monday, 10am-4:30pm. It is free.
600 Canal Park Drive, Duluth

The Army Corp of Engineers and the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association work together to run and support the center.

They estimate, based on electronic counters in the park, that more than one million people walk through their doors each year.
