On a deeper note, Kingdom examines the role of the queer misfit—or any misfit—who does not see themselves fully reflected in the world around them. This song was written from Joey's perspective of growing up as a queer kid in the 90s/00s and seeing few queer representatives in pop culture. Heroes were always the heteronormative "prince in shining armor saving the damsel in distress" trope. The queer—the flamboyant, the outcasted, the alternative—were more often depicted a villainous characters who were to be defeated.

Kingdom is the reclamation of this space, and a retelling of classic fantasy and fairytale tropes, but with a sensitive, whimsical, and often flamboyant outcast as the hero.
