What is PAN?
PAN is a Permanent Account Number which consists of 10 digits alphanumeric number. It is a unique number allotted by the Indian tax department to individuals and companies.
Who can apply for a PAN?
All Indian citizens are eligible to apply for PAN card who having the source of income.
Can an NRI apply for a PAN card?
Yes, an NRI can apply for PAN card, if he/she has got a taxable income in India.
Why do NRI’S need a PAN card?
An NRI needs to have PAN card in the following events:
• If an NRI wants to make any investment in India. E.g. Mutual Funds, Equity shares, Land etc.
• If an NRI has any taxable income in India. E.g. Rent income from property in India, sale of Mutual Funds etc.
• For selling and buying property in India.
• If an NRI wants to open Bank Account in India.
• For filing of ITR.
Is it compulsory for NRI’s to get a PAN card?
Yes, Pan card is compulsory for NRI’s for the following events:

How long does it take to get a PAN card for NRI?
It will take around 15 to 20 days to receive your pan card at your international/foreign location from the date of filing your case with the department. But the PAN number comes online in 5 to 7 days.
What are the documents required for NRI PAN Card?
Two recent passport size photographs must be pasted in the acknowledgement form. A copy of Passport, bank account statement in country of residence, NRE bank account statement revealing at least two transactions in last six months and duly attested.
Is Pan card different for NRI?
No, there is such difference of PAN card for NRI.
Is PAN card compulsory for NRI’S to sell or buying property in India?
In order to enter into any property transaction, it is not necessary for an NRI or a PIO to have a PAN card. However, if the NRI has gone through any sale proceeds that an NRI has received have to be repatriated i.e. if the money has to be sent back to his home country.
