How to grow ginger for an endless harvest!

Описание к видео How to grow ginger for an endless harvest!

Ginger is a plant that is grown worldwide for its delicious edible rhizome. The underground part of Ginger can be re-planted and used to grow an endless supply of new ginger plants at home, either in the ground or in containers. Growing ginger at home is easy when you learn how ginger grows in its wild habitat.

Common Edible Culinary Ginger plants belong to the plant family Zingiberacaea, a large group made up of over 1300 plants including other edible crops such as Turmeric. The Latin botanical name for the plant we'll be growing is Zingiber officiale, this is the crop most commonly sold as 'Ginger Root' in stores.

Why is 'ginger root' not actually a root? The edible underground part of Ginger plants is actually a rhizome, not a root. A rhizome is a swollen modified stem that allows plants to spread horizontally through the ground and store energy reserves to fuel growth. It's the reserves of energy stored in ginger rhizomes that enable us to regrow ginger plants at home even after they have been stored dry on a supermarket shelf for long periods of time.

To grow ginger plants at home you must select a large healthy rhizome with at least two growing points. Use a short and wide pot to allow the rhizome plenty of space to spread horizontally as it establishes, giving you a larger Ginger harvest at the end of the season. Ginger plants grow best in free draining potting mix, this prevents the soil becoming waterlogged causing the rhizome to rot. Grow at a minimum temperature of 20ºC/68ºF to trigger growth as these plants originate for warm tropical and subtropical climates. Ginger plants grow best in partial shade to prevent the leaves getting scorched by direct sunlight.
