A 3-year-old girl is dead, and a 5-year-old is in the hospital with serious injuries after a suspected drunk driving crash in Weldon Township Friday evening.

The Benzie County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as 25-year-old Shaynel Guthrie of Cadillac. She’s charged with operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and operating while intoxicated with a person under 16 in the vehicle.

Guthrie had three minor children in the vehicle at the time of the crash. All three children were ejected from the vehicle.

Investigators said they believe Guthrie failed to stop at the intersection of Kurick Road and Cadillac Highway.

Her car entered the roadway and was struck by another vehicle traveling eastbound on Cadillac Highway, operated by an 18-year-old female from Kaleva, according to the sheriff’s office. The 18-year-old driver was not injured.

Along with the 3 and 5-year-olds, a 4-year-old child was transported to Munson Medical Center, treated, and released.

Guthrie and her adult passenger were not injured. Bond has been set at $500,000.
