Cologne Captured

(12 Mar 1945) Winston Churchill has visited Germany where he took a look at the Siegfried Line. The Allies have already swept past this line of fortification. ® ® The Hohenzollern Bridge across the Rhine at Cologne is reported to have been destroyed. This bridge has been part of memorable events in the past, at the end of the last war the British Army of Occupation marched across it. In 1936 we saw pictures of German soldiers swaggering across when Hitler re-occupied the Rhineland. ® ® Prior to the American's capture of Cologne the city was the target of the first 1,000 bomber raid. The American First Army began the assault on 6th March and fighting was sometimes house to house.
