Shoko is one of the percussion instruments used in gagaku. When used in Buddhism, it is also called kane or sho.
In gagaku, the shoko is called "shoko" or "shogo". There are three types: Tsuri-shoko, Dai-shoko, and Ni-shoko, but Tsuri-shoko is usually used. Shoko also appears in "Engishiki" and "Shoku Nihongi". Shoko is mainly used in Bugaku, but a hook is applied to the inside to hang the shoko. A pillar is applied under the outer wheel and a foot is attached. It is placed with the front facing forward, and the center of the shoko is struck from the back. The large gong has an inner diameter of 12 inches and is used for formal ceremonies, large memorial services, Bugaku, etc.
