This video guides you on how to build your own cyber security lab at home and completely for free. This project is considered the best cyber security beginner project because it provides Hands-On experience using cyber security tools and involves building something entirely from scratch.

This guide is helpful regardless of whether you are interested in offensive security/ethical hacking or defensive security/SOC analyst career paths.
Setup Requirements and Tools: You will need a laptop or PC with at least 8 GB of RAM (16 GB is personally recommended) and at least a 256 GB SSD or standard hard drive.

The home lab will be a virtual machine (VM) that runs on top of your existing operating system. You will use virtualization software, specifically the free-to-download VMware Workstation or VirtualBox. You will also need to download the latest version of the Kali Linux ISO file, which is essentially a pre-built virtual machine.

Installation and Configuration: The steps involve downloading the chosen virtualization software (like VMware Workstation), downloading the Kali Linux ISO, and allocating resources from your personal PC to the new VM (recommending at least 4 GB of RAM and 30 to 40 GB of hard drive space).

After installing Kali Linux and setting up your user account, it is recommended to update all your packages using the simple Linux commands sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade.
Training and Practice: Once you have the bare bones home cyber security lab set up, you can begin adding and installing cyber security and hacking tools.

While Kali Linux comes with many pre-built tools, you can install new ones, such as Burp Suite, using the command line (sudo apt install burp-suite). It is important to get comfortable navigating the command line, as many hacking and Capture the Flag (CTF) tools are built only on command lines and lack a user interface.

For hands-on practice, avoid creating target machines by spinning up another VM, as this doubles resource use. Instead, test exploits on existing vulnerable applications and systems available on the internet, like Metasploitable or the OWASP Goat Shop. You can also find guides online for exploiting vulnerabilities, such as those listed in the OWASP Top 10.

Another highly recommended training method is participating in CTFs (Capture the Flags), which are hacking challenges good for both red teamers and blue teamers, and are often free. For those interested in blue teaming, you can also build out your own SIM (security information and event management) tool.
