It is worth noting that more modern research disputes the authorship of Kuukai and suggests the poem was created in the Heian era closer to 1079, to where the first textual appearance can be dated. Whatever the actual origins of the いろは、it is nevertheless a very useful tool in learning the Hiragana and, later, the Katakana.
