Gangasagar Mela is held at Gangasagar Island in West Bengal. Gangasagar or Sagardwip is an island in the Bay of Bengal. Sagardwip is situated at the confluence of river Ganga and Bay of Bengal, which makes it one of the most popular site for Gangasagar Yatra.

The Ganga is one of the most sacred rivers in the world because of its religious significance. And the point where the Ganga meets the sea is considered sacred by Hindus. Thousands of pilgrims come every year in January to take a holy dip in the river during the Ganga Sagar Mela.

The main attraction of Gangasagar is the temple dedicated to Saint Kapil Muni. Kapil Muni, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, had gained immense knowledge of the Vedas in his early years. That's why Kapil Muni is worshiped by the people to remove their sins. With this belief, millions of people visit Kapil Muni temple chanting "Sab Teerth Baar Baar Ganga Sagar Ekbar".
