I've been having a lot of feelings about my baby Ivy (played by my other baby Megan) this week.

I'm gonna go on a short rant about Ivy Lynn for a second, so skip this if you don't care.

In my opinion Ivy will always be the most realistic and well-developed character in the show. And I will tell you why. Ivy had been a chorus girl for ten years, bouncing between auditions and dreaming about the spotlight. She also struggled with the pressure put on her by her mother constantly. When Marilyn came along it was her chance; Tom, her good friend, had written it and was confident she could play the part. Now enter Karen Cartwright-newbie performer with over-sized expectations. This girl gets handed everything, like the fact that she's good overrides the need for experience. And for Ivy she's seeing everyone fall all over this new girl with no more talent that she has. As tensions between Tom and Derek and Julia and Will and her mother and Eileen grow and everyone is getting more anxious Ivy is practically crushed under all of it. Everything is on her. Not to mention she's on a thousand different medications. And suddenly Ivy, who's always seemed so in control, is losing herself to addictions and self-doubt and depression. And after all her effort, they give the part to some movie star, and kick her out all together for one mistake. Craftily she manages to weasel her way back into the chorus, only to find her love Derek all over Rebecca and Karen, and Karen now the shining understudy for a clearly awful Marilyn. Now I'm not saying that Ivy didn't do bad things, but she made mistakes. She was lost and depressed and alone, looking for a shoulder to lean on and something to take the pain away. She didn't sleep with Dev because she's heartless, she was drunk and broken up. And finally after everything they give the part to Karen Cartwright, even after her breakdowns and blatant lack of training on the part. Can we not see how after all this progression Ivy dumped those pills into her palm? I mean it was there from a mile away, she'd fallen victim to her own expectations, and by not meeting them and losing everything she once loved she felt hopeless. Beyond any other character in the show her arch and timeline were by far the truest to reality. And she was, in my book, the only Marilyn to choose from.
