Development of Tongue
1. Origin:
• The tongue develops from multiple pharyngeal arches during the 4th week of intrauterine life.
2. Anterior Two-Thirds of Tongue:
• Derived mainly from the first pharyngeal arch.
• Forms via lateral lingual swellings and tuberculum impar.
• Sensory innervation: Lingual nerve (branch of mandibular nerve, CN V3).
• Taste innervation: Chorda tympani (branch of facial nerve, CN VII).
3. Posterior One-Third of Tongue:
• Develops from the copula formed by the second and third arches, which is later overgrown by the hypopharyngeal eminence of the third and fourth arches.
• Sensory and taste innervation: Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX).
4. Posterior Most Part & Epiglottis:
• Derived from the fourth pharyngeal arch.
• Innervated by the superior laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve (CN X).
5. Muscular Component:
• Tongue muscles arise from occipital myotomes (somites).
• Motor innervation: Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII), except palatoglossus (supplied by vagus).
