(26 Mar 2020) Hundreds of South Africans were travelling by car and plane on Thursday in a last-minute effort to return to their homes before the country begins a lockdown in an attempt to stem the spread of the new coronavirus in the country.
The lockdown will begin at midnight South African time (2200 GMT Thursday), and will last for 21 days, though may be extended if the situation with the new virus does not improve.
As of early Thursday South Africa has reported more than 700 virus cases.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.
