Former German Ambassador to the US and former chair of the Munich Security Conference Wolfgang Ischinger believes that the West has a 'double standard problem' in the eyes of the Global South, when it comes to Ukraine and the Middle East.

Speaking to DW from Rio de Janeiro after the G20 summit concluded there, Ischinger commented that leaders had struggled to agree on the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The former diplomat said that the West needs to acknowledge that demanding solidarity against Russia from the Global South, runs into 'credibility' problems when those countries turn around and ask the West to support their stance on the conflict in the Middle East.

Ischinger also addressed the collapse of Germany's coalition government, warning that the future health of the European Union relied on a strong Germany economy.

He spoke as well about Donald Trump's imminent return to power in the US, and its potential to disrupt global relations.
