STORYLINE:
Striking mine workers at platinum producer Lonmin's Marikana mine, in South Africa, say they will return to work on Wednesday evening.
Discussions will continue on Thursday between rival unions in an attempt to resolve the original dispute.
Hundreds of miners embarked on an wildcat strike on Tuesday - re-igniting fears that there could be a reprisal of the violence that hit the industry last year.
Tensions have been high after the killing this weekend of an organiser from the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
Police have confirmed that a 46-year man who was a regional organiser of the AMCU was killed at a tavern near Rustenburg on Saturday night.
The protesting miners say they want Lonmin to ban the rival National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) from operating there.
They gathered on Wednesday at a stadium near the hillside where 34 miners were shot dead by police last August.
Addressing the crowd, Joseph Matunjwa, the president of AMCU, said: "Lonmin management can't offer us anything, and all we need to do is to come together as an organisation, and as leadership we need to come to you mineworkers and talk to you so that we can all be on the same page, so that no one loses their jobs."
Lonmin officials said all 13 of their shafts were "not operational" on Monday and Tuesday morning.
Lonmin, whose shares are listed in London and Johannesburg, is the world third-biggest platinum producer.
