Roatan, Honduras | Walking Tour of the Port Town Center & Gumbalimba Park, The Untamed Roatán

Located off the northern coast of Honduras, Roatán is a small island frequently visited by cruise lines for its lush jungles, beautiful beaches, and incredible coral reefs. If you're visiting, it's likely via a cruise ship in the town of Coxen Hole. That said, there's not a whole lot to do right off the boat, so you're going to want to book a tour or two. Thankfully, there's plenty to choose from.

The mountainous jungles make for phenomenal ziplining, while the aforementioned reefs offer some world class scuba diving. If you have small kids though, the choices are a little more sparse. We opted to visit Gumbalimba Park, which is an eco-park about 30'ish minutes, by car, from the port town center.

Once there, you'll trek with your tour guide through the jungle, learning about the flora and fauna of the area. You'll also get to walk an awesome rope bridge, traverse a cave full of historical pirate information, and (of course) visit some animals. These include green and black iguanas, macaw, and white-faced monkeys. You'll have photo-ops with most of them, and get to interact with the monkeys, or rather... they'll interact with you.

We'll take you through the park along with our tour, but before that, we'll also spend some time exploring port before heading out. It's fairly small, and when not crowded (e.g., in the afternoons), it only takes about 30 minutes to really see everything. If you opt to visit Gumbalimba Park yourself, do take care that while you can get around to some degree, it is NOT wheelchair accessible. Even just a stroller can be difficult to manage in some areas.
