Walt, accompanied by his family, arrives at the sterile environment of the hospital for a crucial CT scan, hoping to gauge the effectiveness of his chemotherapy. The medical staff informs him that the results won't be available for a full week, but Walt can't shake the nagging feeling as he catches a glimpse of his own lung scan,a menacing dark spot looms large. Convinced his time is running out and acutely aware that recent financial strain – including hefty medical bills and Saul Goodman’s steep fees for laundering his dirty money at a brutally unfavorable rate, left his family with practically nothing, Walt makes a desperate decision. He embarks on a multi-day bender of cooking meth, a last-ditch effort to secure his family’s financial future. He fabricates an elaborate story about visiting his mother for an extended weekend, a deception intended to mask his absence from his wife, Skyler. He manages to rope in Jesse, who is initially resistant but eventually cancels a promising date in Santa Fe with Jane, swayed by Walt’s urgent plea that they must process their entire Methylamine supply before it spoils.
After gathering the necessary supplies and picking Walt up from the airport, Jesse and Walt drive their beat-up RV to their remote desert lab. Walt, insistent on secrecy, directs Jesse to hide the keys, but Jesse, in his carelessness, leaves them in the ignition, unknowingly draining the vehicle’s battery. After days of intense work, Walt estimates they’ve amassed nearly $1.2 million worth of high-grade meth. Their portable generator is bone dry, and Walt, consumed by urgency, is determined to refuel and get right back to cooking. However, Jesse, sensing their exhaustion, persuades him to take a much-needed break at a motel for the night. When they try to start the RV the next morning, they discover the dead battery. Desperate, they attempt to siphon gas from the RV to the generator to jump-start it, but a spill ignites the generator in a burst of flames. Jesse, with no other option, uses all of their drinking water to extinguish the fire. Jesse, after realizing their plight, suggests they contact Skinny Pete for assistance using Walt's cell phone, despite Walt’s knowing that Skyler will likely discover the call in his phone records. Walt, with little choice, agrees, and Jesse tries to explain their location, but there is a growing uncertainty over whether Pete has understood correctly. A frantic follow up call to Skinny Pete reveals that he's way off track, before the phone completely loses power.
Driven to desperation, Walt dismantles the generator in a desperate attempt to trickle-charge the RV's battery by manually cranking the generator. The vehicle sputters to life momentarily, only to die immediately. Walt, slipping deeper into despair and heat exhaustion, begins to believe that he is actually dying. Jesse finally gets through to him after Walt coughs up blood, as Walt reveals he believes he deserves to die for the mountain of lies he has woven for his family. Jesse tries to pull Walt from the darkness, offering a glimmer of hope and inspiring Walt to craft their own battery from their limited resources. This makeshift battery provides just enough power to jump-start the RV, allowing them to finally make their way back to Albuquerque. Jesse drops Walt at the airport, reassuring him that if Walt doesn't survive, his family will get their share of the money.
The following week, Walt and his family return to the doctor, receiving the shocking news that Walt’s cancer is in remission and has shrunk by an astonishing 80%. The ominous “growth” Walt saw on the scan was merely inflamed lung tissue, and the blood he coughed up was the result of an esophageal tear, an injury that will heal in time. While Walt's family erupts in joy, Walt, privately, succumbs to a violent outburst of anger and frustration realizing that cheating death has not solved anything, instead extending the lifetime of lies and the dangerous drug empire he has created.
