Rebels in Zaire say the three day cease-fire is over.

They halted the seven-month civil war to give time for President Mobutu Sese Seko to give into their demands to resign. He has refused to do so.

The rebels ledby Laurent Kabila want a summit between the two leaders before any new attempts to halt the fighting.

South Africa is the probable destination for any such meeting, it has already held talks between the two sides.

Last week the rebels declared a pause in their military operation after capturing Zaire's second city of Lubumbashi, to give Mobutu time to consider his position.

A top aide to rebel leader Laurent Kabila says they have decided not to give Mobutu another chance.

He says Mobutu needs to leave the country, then a cease-fire can be negotiated.

SOUNDBITE:
\"It is a war, because there is a regime in Kinshasa which is killing people. So we want them to go and after they have left the country, then we will consider a ceasefire. If any need for a ceasefire will be there. Because if Mobutu leaves then the war will be end, will end the same day. Because he's there, the man who brought the devil and he must go with the devil.\"

The aide says Kabila may accept an offer from Mobutu to talk face-to-face, but the rebels still insist he quit or face all out war when they advance on the capital Kinshasa.

Despite the assurances of the rebels that if Mobutu resigns there will be not fighting in the capital Kinshasa. Residents there are preparing for an attack as the ailling leader looks set to hang on to power until the very end.
