45 Victims of Labor Exploitation Released.
The Civil Guard and the National Police, within the framework of Operation Lhotse-Tiger, have dismantled a human trafficking network and have freed 45 victims of labor exploitation on agricultural farms in Catalonia, Aragon, Castile and León, Valencia and Extremadura. The organization was based in Zaragoza and was made up of citizens of Pakistani and Argentine origin specialized in recruiting and exploiting vulnerable migrants.The group deceived them with false promises of work and housed them in unsanitary conditions, under constant surveillance and without documentation. Nine people have been arrested and three of them have been sent to prison for crimes of human trafficking for the purpose of labor exploitation, forgery of documents and membership in a criminal group.The investigation began in 2024 when an inspection detected several temporary workers of Asian origin living in very precarious conditions in a warehouse of a food company located in the province of Ávila. As a result of the police investigations, three arrests were made : one in charge of the custody of the women and two managers of the food company for having knowledge of the victims' situation and taking advantage of it.In parallel, days earlier another discovery of Nepalese workers subjected to exploitative conditions was made , in this case in an agricultural facility in Valverde de la Vera, in Cáceres. Specifically, seven workers in an irregular situation were discovered, who worked with falsified documentation and who lived in deplorable conditions and even begging.The connection between the two investigations led the Guardia Civil and the National Police to carry out a joint operation that ended with arrests and the release of more victims of exploitation. A search was carried out in Barcelona and an individual was arrested for demanding money from an exploited worker in Ávila in exchange for his documentation.Police sources have explained that these employees slept crammed together on mattresses, with only one bathroom for everyone and in spaces with structural deficiencies. They came from Eastern Europe and lived in a situation of poverty and extreme need, with false documentation and with the obligation to pay the criminal group 100 euros per month , in addition to seven euros per day to be transported to work.Sometimes, the exploiters acted as mediators with the owners of the companies to get their victims jobs, for which they kept part of their wages.
