What is wheel offset? It refers to how the wheels mount in your wheel wells, and how much space you have on either side of the wheel. It’s very important to get this right, because a wheel with the wrong offset can rub and cause problems with your suspension, brakes, and even body parts, like fenders. If you’re willing to make further modifications to accommodate those parts, you have more flexibility. It’s best to get wheels with an offset that matches your existing setup.

Zero wheel offset is when the hub mounting surface is in line with the centerline of the wheel.
Positive wheel offset is when the hub mounting surface is in front (more toward the street side) of the centerline of the wheel. Most wheels on front-wheel drive cars and newer rear-drive vehicles have positive offset.
Negative offset is when the hub mounting surface is behind the wheel centerline. “Deep dish” wheels are typically a negative offset.

Too Much Positive Offset
Expensive damage from the inner edge of the wheel and tire rubbing against the bodywork or suspension
Interference with brake parts
Risk of tire failure
Poor handling
Making your car unstable

Problems From Too Much Negative Offset
Increased steering wheel kick-back
Additional stress on the entire suspension
Poor handling

Backspacing is the distance your wheels and tires need to accommodate both offset and wheel width. It’s especially important to factor in when the new package you want is wider than what came on your vehicle.

Rim markings decoding hints: Nearly every wheel has the offset stamped on it's flange somewhere, usually engraved or etched on the wheel as a part of the wheel markings (e.g., 6½ J x 15 H2 5/112 ET39 - ET39 means 39mm offset) and its measurement unit is millimeter (mm). The wheel offset can have zero, positive or negative value.

How do I know the diameter of my wheel?
Wheel or rim diameter is the distance measured in inches across the face of the wheel, from bead seat to bead seat. It's measured this way because that's where the tire and the wheel come together.
