Top 10 Things to Avoid in Italy

We know you cannot wait to arrive in Italy! But do you know what annoys locals or what you must never do to avoid public humiliation? Keep watching and find out!
Italy is the fifth most visited country in the world. Millions of tourists invade every year the twisty roads of Italy’s ancient cities. And you should do it too!
The DOS in this country are easy to guess, but what about the DON’TS?

1. DON’T WEAR FLIP-FLOPS AND SWIMWEAR WHILE VISITING CITIES OR ART SITES

Museums, churches, and ancient ruins are everywhere in Italy, and of course, these places are a MUST-SEE. But mind your clothes, especially if you want to visit the inside of churches and museums: you could be asked to leave and dress properly.

2. DON’T TIP IN RESTAURANTS
Waiters are paid a full salary in Italy, so if you are planning to tip anyway as a compliment for good service, remember that most of the time your tip will be held by the restaurant's owner, and not the waitress! Remember also that if you leave less than 5 to 10€ could be also seen as an offense…

3. DON’T TAKE PHOTOS AT PEOPLE

Italians are generally friendly but don’t like to be recorded, especially in residential areas. Don’t insist if they move away from your camera! Or some Carabinieri could show you how unfriendly they might be!

4. DON’T FALL FOR TOURISTS TRAPS

If you want to really enjoy the beauties if Italy, stick to what is ‘official’: only jump on taxis with a license and only ask to professional guides for a tour. And if you want to eat fine food, ask a local where to eat properly or check the reviews on Google and TripAdvisor.

5. DON’T FLY YOUR DRONE WITHOUT CHECKING THE LOCAL LAWS
Italy is one of the most beautiful countries in the world from above, but also one of the most strict concerning drone flights: only bring drones weighing below 250g, avoid flights in cities, above roads, above people and avoid flights inside building and in national parks: fines are up to 30.000€ and 1 year of incarceration! The police are also looking on social media for your nice videos and sending the fine to your home! Remember also, insurance is mandatory! Wanna check where you can fly with no restrictions? Visit d-flight.it

6. DON’T GET DRUNK IN PUBLIC

How can you resist those sweet red Chianti wines, or to all of those artisanal beers made in the Alps… Impossible! Just remember to be moderated: being drunk in public is considered as an offense and it is against the law. You could be arrested on the spot! 7. DON’T FORGET TO CHANGE SOME CASH Not every place accepts credit card, especially for transactions below 5 to 10€. So always keep some cash, it is needed to buy that strong espresso!

7. DON’T ORDER CAPPUCCINO WHILE DINING
Cappuccino is only for breakfast, Spaghetti are not meant to be cut, and Pizza is without the pineapple. In Italy food is holier than the Pope, and it must be respected. You could be sent away from your table and politely ask to never come again! Ask the waiter for suggestions, relax, and let them do their job!

8. DON’T FORGET TO LEARN SOME BASIC ITALIAN

Not everybody in Italy speaks fluent English - or speaks English at all! So, remember to learn some of the sentences you feel you might ask to an Italian or at least keep google translate ready in your hands!

9. DON’T BE STEREOTYPICAL

This is the most important: Italy is not like shown in movies. It is the sixth-largest economy in the world. People is busy doing business and running big tech companies and start-ups. Most people traveling to Italy believe it is just dolce vita and loud chaos, but this is considered VERY offensive.

This is the complete guide to the DON’TS of Italy, you are now ready to book your holidays in this fantastic country!
