Located in the tranquil setting of a 40-acre coffee estate in Chikkamagalur, at the foothills of Mullahangiri Hills, this development offers a mesmerizing natural backdrop for each of its built forms. It includes a Clubhouse, Single Villas, Twin Villas, a Spa, a restaurant, a Treehouse, and other ancillary facilities. The project aims to blur the boundaries between the built and natural environment, creating a harmonious and seamless blend.
The design concept successfully integrates built forms into the existing landscape, with the aim of creating a cohesive and sustainable project. The challenge lay in creating a seamless blend, where the built form responds to both the immediate site context and that of the hill station. The surfaces of the buildings are rendered with earthy and rustic materials to accentuate their contemporary forms, using local materials available on site wherever possible.
The Clubhouse is thoughtfully designed in multiple levels to capture the breathtaking view around it. The roof of the arrival area is inspired by flowers in a forest, and its form rises up from three distinct points to form a large overhang. The canopy is constructed using metal and coated with Ferro-concrete to give it a smooth and sensual feel. The clubhouse comprises of a reception area, restaurant, and an infinity pool that is nestled amidst the trees. The grand helical staircase takes one to the lower level of the restaurant, which offers a panoramic view of the valley beyond.
The villas are designed with a contemporary twist, questioning the conventional notion of a cottage with a traditional pitched roof. They feature butterfly roofs and are extensively glazed to capture the surrounding views. Each villa boasts a large deck that is both inside and outside, allowing for a strong tactile connection with the landscape. The exaggerated overhangs of the roof not only create a theatrical effect but also become shading devices to cut the glare and heat of the sun.
The Treehouse, perched delicately on a rocky outcrop, marks the edge of the property and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding hills. The Spa is designed as a womb-like space, with massage rooms that open into private courts.
Overall, the development successfully integrates the built forms into the landscape while maintaining the integrity of the natural environment. The interplay between open and semi-open spaces is orchestrated to maximize the panoramic views surrounding the site. Locally sourced materials are used throughout, imparting a rustic feel to contemporary forms.
