Hamas militants encounter Israeli troops in Gaza school

Israel's military released footage it said showed fighting in Shejaiya and a tunnel shaft as Israel sharply stepped up strikes on the Gaza Strip pounding the length of the Palestinian enclave and killing hundreds in a new, expanded phase of the war.

The videos show what is said to be a school compound and debris covering the entrance to a tunnel.

The United States’ top diplomat has told the Israeli government that he expects it to end the war in Gaza within the next month.

At meetings in Israel last week, Antony Blinken, the American secretary of state, made it clear that Israel would have until early January to wrap up its ground operation against Hamas.
