Such a famous song with such a recognizable bassline. The bassline was originally played with a double (upright) bass. That’s why I’ve chosen for my Fender Precision with flatwounds to get that ‘woody’ sound.

The challenge in this song is to play the maingroove (for instance bar 5-8) in one position while keeping your hand (almost) still. I’ve chosen to play the D note in this groove on the fifth fret on the A-string. You can also play the D-note with the open D-string, but I feel that you have more control over the length of the note when it’s played on the fifth fret. I often like to leave just a little bit of ‘space’ between the notes and that’s more easy on a fretted note than on a open string.

In the left hand I almost always start the root note of a major chord with my second finger. On a minor chord I almost always start with my first finger on the root note. Look for instance how the notes on the A chord in the Chorus are played (for instance bar 9 and 11), where I start on the A note with my second finger. In the Bridge I start with my first finger of the Dm (bar 37, 41) and the Am chord (bar 40, 48). This way of approaching the major and minor chords helps me to feel confident in playing the groove/notes.
