Horseshoe crabs are often called living fossils because they have barely changed in over 450 million years.

What makes them especially remarkable is their bright blue blood, which contains a substance called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate, or LAL. This substance clots instantly in the presence of bacterial toxins, making it essential for testing vaccines, injectable drugs, and medical devices for contamination.

Each crab can donate about 20 to 30 percent of its blood, and a single quart (≈1 liter) can be worth up to $15,000. After bleeding, most crabs are returned to the ocean, but many die or suffer weakened health, which raises concerns about the long-term survival of their populations.

Despite these risks, horseshoe crab blood has saved countless human lives and remains irreplaceable in modern medicine.
