The nation's benchmark index closed at a record high on the first trading day of the year.
The sharpest gain in over six months, piercing through the 29-hundred mark for the first time ever.
Here's Min Suk-hyen with a breakdown of the digits.
The benchmark KOSPI surged almost 2-and-a-half percent on the first trading day of the year... to close at 2-thousand-9-hundred-and-44.
It was the sixth session of new highs for the index, and many analysts think reaching 3-thousand is only a matter of time.
The KOSPI has been logging new highs since late November when it first hit 26-hundred.

Investors are optimistic about South Korea's possible rollout of COVID-19 vaccines next month and hopes for an economic recovery.

The buying has been strongest among individual investors, many of whom, in the pandemic, have been getting into the market for the first time.

"The purchase today was led by individual investors. They overcame a large sell off by institutional investors and semi-conductors and components for electric cars led the surge today."

Local retail investors net bought 950 million U.S. dollars worth of KOSPI shares,... and foreigners also bought at around 82 million dollars.
Institutional investors, however, sold off at about 1 billion dollars.

The secondary KOSDAQ also closed higher, at almost 980 points, up zero-point-9-5 percent from the previous session.

The Korean won gained back strength,... closing at 10-82 against the U.S. dollar.
